Understanding Notary Services
A Notary Public in the Isle of Man is appointed by the First Deemster under the provisions of the Advocates Act 1995. While the functions of a Notary are not exhaustively defined in statute, the role carries significant responsibility and requires a high degree of professional judgment and legal expertise.
The primary role of a Notary Public is to certify and authenticate documents and signatures for international use. This typically involves the Notary affixing their official stamp and seal directly onto the document, or issuing a bespoke notarial certificate, depending on the specific requirements of the recipient jurisdiction.
Notarial Services Available via Aston & Williams
As part of our comprehensive offering, Aston & Williams can organise the following notarial services:
-
Authentication of documents – Verifying original documents or certifying copies as true and accurate.
-
Verification of signatures – Confirming the identity of signatories and witnessing the signing of legal documents.
-
Administering oaths and taking declarations – Including assistance with the drafting of affidavits or statutory declarations, tailored to your needs.
-
Apostille services – Where required, we can coordinate the issuance of an Apostille certificate through the Isle of Man Courts. This official certificate confirms the signature and status of the Notary and is often essential for documents intended for use in jurisdictions that are party to the Hague Convention.
For urgent matters, we can facilitate same day Apostille services through our close coordination with the Isle of Man Court of Justice, which processes Apostilles twice daily. Standard Apostille requests can typically be completed within 48 hours.
Please note that Apostille fees are separate from notarial service charges, as they are imposed by the Isle of Man Government.
Additionally, Commissioners for Oaths, authorised under the Commissioner
for Oaths Act 1962, may also perform similar functions. However, documents
signed by a Commissioner for Oaths cannot be apostilled, which may limit
their acceptance internationally.
Disclaimer: Aston & Williams is not a licensed or regulated legal practice,
and uses third party duly appointed Notaries for Notarial Services.
